Der größte Teil der naturwissenschaftlichen Sammlungen ist in Museen untergebracht, einige jedoch sind in Instituten oder privaten Einrichtungen zu finden. Von größtem Wert ist Typusmaterial. Arten werden anhand von sog. Typusbelegen erstmalig beschrieben, die in Museen nachvollziehbar hinterlegt werden.
