Alexandria Digital Library
[Alexandrias digitale Bücherei]
The project began in 1994 with the development of the Alexandria Digital Library (ADL), a distributed digital library with collections of georeferenced materials and services for accessing those collections. Distributed means the library's components may be spread across the Internet. Georeferenced means the library's holdings are associated with a region (footprint) on the surface of the Earth. Phase I of the Alexandria Digital Library Project was supported by the NSF's Digital Library Initiative: NSF IR94-11330. ADL provides HTML clients to access its collections and gazetteer, and provides specific information management tools, such as the Feature Type Thesaurus for classing types of geographic features, as well as downloadable software code.
